Often home owners inherit items within their homes that are less than desirable. Items like inefficient and/or leaky doors and windows come to mind. Replacing these items is a major investment in your home that should ultimately pay off with energy savings.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (or the “Stimulus Bill”) has made changes to the energy efficiency tax credits available to Americans.

The biggest change is that the credits have been raised from 10% of the cost to 30% of the cost for installations put in place from January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2010. The maximum credit has been raised from $500 to $1500 over this two year period. Along with that, the cap of $200 on windows has been removed.

It should be noted that some ENERGY STAR qualified windows will not qualify after June 1, 2009. It is important that you check to see if the windows you are considering installing will qualify for the tax credit. Absolute Construction and Remodeling Inc. can help you install qualified windows.

Did you know that metal roofs can look just like asphalt roofs and be significantly more energy efficient? This Metro Shingle roof is an example of how a metal roof can look like traditional asphalt shingles. Your savings don’t need to stop with a tax credit, you can get immediate savings to your heating and cooling bills with a metal roof.

If you are considering alternate energy sources for your home, please be aware that Absolute Construction and Remodeling Inc. has experience with geothermal heating systems. Geothermal heat pumps, solar water heaters and solar panels are not subject to the $1,500 maximum tax credit. This is true for fuel cell, and small wind energy systems as well. In addition credits for these systems are available through 2016. These credits are especially applicable to new home construction and secondary residences where credits for ENERGY STAR roofs and windows do not apply.Â

Most of us have seen them on car doors, safes, and offices. Now there beginning to show up in residential homes; I’m talking about keypad entry systems. You have the option to use your key, or the option to enter a code to unlock your front door.

There are a lot of advantages for these units; for instance, you always have the opportunity to change the code at anytime if you believe the code has been compromised, you never have to worry about losing your keys, you never have to leave a key under the rug for company, and some of the newer models let you customize multiple codes for multiple users. Say for instance that your housekeeper recently moved on to another job, you can now simply delete her code without effecting your families codes, you no longer have to continuously update everyone with the new code.

Another feature that some of the newer models have is the ability to send you a text message whenever the lock has been used. You can now monitor who and when people are accessing your home. Say some relatives call you and say surprise, we’re at your front door, well now you can remotely let them in (or make sure they stay out if your house is a mess).

The prices on these units are pretty reasonable. Looking at Home Depots website they’re selling between $99 – $148. For more of the high tech remote control units I recommend looking at Schlage’s website, they offer a vast selection with great features and appealing designs.

If you or someone you know already uses keypad entry, please let us know your opinons about them in our comments section.

This week’s blog entry will be about the Marvin Window factory tour that we took a couple weeks ago. As some of you may not know, Marvin Windows is based out of Warroad, MN. Marvin was kind enough to provide us a trip to their facility and an extensive tour.

While at Marvin, we learned a great deal about some of their new products like SillGuard, and Venting Picture Windows. We also learned about their manufacturing process.

Marvin SillGuard is a new way of keeping out water and moisture by effectively moving it to the exteriors of window and door openings. The Marvin SillGuard is easy to install and is made from non-corrosive and non-conductive recycled polypropylene.

The new Marvin Venting Picture Windows are an industry first. The Venting Windows provide the beauty of a picture window with the opportunity for cross ventilation. It provides fresh air and outside noises without any actual breeze coming through.

Here are some of the highlights of the manufacturing process we noticed while at Marvin:

Marvin does not ever use two different species of wood for any of their products.

They can design and produce any window that you can think of.

Some of their patio screen doors are operated by rollers on the top of the doors.

It’s unbelievable how many steps go into making a window!

To sum it up, this tour showed us that Marvin has got some new ideas and great products. However, while we like what Marvin is doing, there are many other companies out there that build great windows. It’s important to choose a window that not only looks great, performs well, and fits within your budget.

If you’re interested in finding out more information about windows or would like an estimate on adding or replacing windows at your house, please feel free to contact us.

In our last post for the optimist, we broke down some advantages of adding a composite, cedar, or ipê (ee-pay) deck to your home. Now for you glass half empty folks, we will list some disadvantages to each one to help you in your decision making process.

Disadvantages of Composite

Only wood will truly give you the true look of a wood deck

Will scratch or stain. Immediately clean with warm water and soap if there is a spill.

Hot grease from the grill could melt a panel

It will fade over time. A tan line effect could happen if you have rugs on your deck. We also recommend choosing a darker color than you want to counter act the fade.

Not completely maintenance free. It needs to be cleaned to maintain a fresh look

It expands when heated and contracts when cooled so be sure your installer is accounting for this fluctuation by applying a gap between boards.

More expensive than a natural wood deck

Disadvantages of Cedar

Requires a power wash and stain at least once every 3 years

It may crack, splinter or warp

Softwoods deteriorate quicker than hardwoods

Can mold if it is not well maintained

The upfront cost is cheaper but over time it cost more to maintain

Cedar is not as flexible as composite decks limiting the ability for custom curves

There aren’t as many color variances in comparison to a composite deck

Disadvantages of Ipê

Hard to work with because of its weight and lack of flexibility

Expensive. Cost is about the same as your high end composite decks

Availability can be an issue since it is imported from South America

Requires additional labor. (pre-drilling of fasteners)

We hope we have helped you in making an educated decision on what kind of material to use for your new deck. If you would like more information on deck designs feel free to contact us. Our next blog will be on windows. If there is a topic you would like for us to blog on leave a comment request and who knows the next blog could be just for you.

Summer is just around the corner (at least we hope) and what better way to enjoy it than with a new deck. There are plenty of benefits to adding a deck to your home including future resale value & some family fun and enjoyment. However, before the fun begins you will need to decide what kind of deck is right for you. We have gathered info on the 3 most popular decking choices used today; Composite decking, Cedar, & Ipê (ee-pay) hardwoods.

Benefits of Composite Wood

Composite is low-maintenance

No weather sealing or staining

Can be molded to create desired curves and arches

Cost more upfront but cost to maintain is low

Typically last 10-20 years

Splinter free

No need to paint and comes in a variety of grays and earth tones

Made to look like many exotic wood grainsÂ

Composite wood material is a mixture of natural wood scraps (sawdust, pulp fibers, bamboo, straw etc.) and virgin or waste plastics. It is viewed by some as a renewable resource because it’s made out of materials that would normally be thrown away. Trex is probably the most well known and been around the longest. For more info check out the following www.TREX.com.

Benefits of Cedar Wood

High resistance to UV rays, moisture and insects

Range of color from cinnamon to silver gray, if stained the colors vary even more.

Strong enough to protect deck fastenings from corrosion

Along with its beauty it also gives off an appealing scent

Light yet durable and easy to work with

Biodegradable and environmentally friendly

Accepts stains well

Has a proven track record throughout history

Cedar is softwood and a popular natural wood used for decking because of its high resistance to elements and insects. Besides being durable its rustic charm makes it considered to be one of the most appealing to the eye. Cedar can be stained in a number of different colors, and purchased in a number of different grades. (smooth vs. knots). Here is a great site for cedar decking information www.cedar-deck.org.

Benefits of Ipê Wood

High resistance to decay can last up to 25 years

Scratch resistant and about twice as hard as oak

Fire resistance rating similar to concrete

Low maintenance, can be left unsealed or sealed to capture the natural color

Wood characteristics allow boards to resist twisting, bowing, and cracks

Biodegradable and environmentally friendly

Resistant to termites and other insects

Used for boardwalks in NY including Coney Island docks

Ipê (ee-pay) is a durable Brazilian hardwood. Although not well know, Ipê decking is a great alternative to those looking for a low maintenance deck with real wood. Like xerox to the copier, Ipê is commonly referred to as “Iron Wood” who is a major distributor of Ipê decking materials. www.ipedeckingsource.com
